GENERAL INFORMATION
The Putnam Career & Technical Center is pleased to provide nursing education to Putnam and surrounding counties in order to meet the need for the growing number of licensed practical nurses. The program will consist of one year of classroom and clinical instruction.
Students in the practical nursing program will receive 1350 hours of instruction. Licensed Practical Nurses may practice under the direction of a registered professional nurse, licensed physician, or licensed dentist and shall contribute to the nursing assessment by collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data in an accurate and timely manner. They may also contribute to the evaluation of nursing interventions and to the modification of the health care plan.
Courses include Anatomy, Fundamental Skills of Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Nutrition and Diet Therapy, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Pharmacology, Personal Vocational Relationships, and Integrated Social Sciences.
This program runs from August to August and meets five days per week. The teacher to student ratio is 1:10 in the clinical setting.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Medical Terminology- (Class will be offered each summer at PCTC. Call for additional information.) Must pass with an 80% or higher and class must have been taken within the past 5 years.
3. Good mental and physical health.
FINANCIAL AID
Financial assistance may be available to those who qualify. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at extension 207 to discuss financial aid options. PCTC accepts PELL grants, WIA, Vocational Rehab, VA, and private scholarships. PCTC does not participate in student loans.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications will be available in the main office Monday—Friday from 8:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Applications will be accepted from January 5, 2009 through March 20, 2009 at 3pm.
1. Complete admission application. http://putnam.schoolspan.com/PCTC, Click on Forms & Information, then Student and Parent info. There are 2 links for LPN. Print both, fill out application, read packet then submit.
2. Order an official high school and/or college transcripts or GED scores. These should be mailed from the school before the application deadline.
3. Send the complete application with the $50.00 non-refundable testing and application fee to:

4. The LPN secretary will schedule the entrance exam test which will be administered in April.
5. The applicants with the highest test scores (minimum of 65%) will be offered an interview. The selection process is based upon a combination of test and interview scores.
6. Once a student is chosen, there is a $250.00 non-refundable seat-holding fee which will be due by the deadline indicated on the acceptance letter. A meeting outlining program requirements such as immunizations, physicals, state background check and fingerprinting, and random drug testing will be held. The cost for the state background check and fingerprinting is $40.00. Date for the orientation meeting will be indicated on the acceptance letter.
7. A current CPR Health Care Provider card is required before the first day of class.
8. All students must have successfully completed a medical terminology class before the first day of school with an 80% or higher grade. The class must be current, within the last 5 years. You may enroll in the medical terminology class at PCTC. Call the school for course dates & cost.
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
Health Requirements: Selected applicants will be required to pass a physical examination given by a licensed physician prior to start of class. Following are the criteria that must be met:
- Dental exam with physician signature (any corrective action needs to take place before school begins).
- Physical exam, including non-reactive PPD (if PPD is positive, a chest x-ray is required), serology, tetanus booster, hepatitis B vaccine, varicella vaccine, and evidence of up-to-date childhood immunization (MMR booster if 21 years or younger).
- Applicants must provide a complete and detailed list of any medications that are taken. This list shall include prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
- Applicants understand and agree that he/she shall submit to random drug/alcohol screening as a part of the admission criteria as well as part of the entire school year policy. In the event that the results are positive and the applicant/student can not produce documentation supporting a valid prescription for the positive substance, the applicant/student will be denied or terminated.

The following information is given in order to acquaint you with the entrance exam for the Practical Nursing program.
STUDYING
It is each applicant’s responsibility to prepare for the entrance exam. You will need to gather appropriate study materials. The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Study Guide can be purchased via telephone at 1-800-667-7531 or www.atitesting.com for $36.95. In addition to the study guide, the company offers an Online Practice Assessment for an additional $30.00. The bundle price is $58.00I Since the TEAS test will be the entrance exam, I strongly recommend purchasing the TEAS study guide. Bookstores and libraries also have Practical Nursing entrance exam study materials that would be appropriate.
We have attempted to provide you with a general outline of the test. If you feel you need extra assistance in one of the areas, such as math, please call 586-2411 to obtain information regarding adult basic education classes. There is no charge for the assistance.
TESTING
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a scholastic aptitude assessment that will help determine the selection of students in the Practical Nursing program. The test will be administered on-line and will be timed.
The TEAS consists of four content areas: math, reading, English, and science.
*The math sub-test covers whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions and decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion.
*Reading covers paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions.
*The English sub-test measures knowledge of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling.
*The Science portion of the exam covers science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, anatomy & physiology, basic physical principles, and general science.
RESULTS
Upon completion of the exam, you will immediately receive a copy of your test scores. The top scoring applicants will be interviewed. Final selections will be determined on test scores and interview scores combined.

TERMINAL OBJECTIVES

Participate in providing care to clients with acute, chronic, or life-threatening physical health conditions.
Maintain client trust and confidentiality.
Be culturally aware of clients needs and practices.
Provide client teaching at appropriate levels to the individual.
Utilize the nursing process as the problem solving approach in caring for clients.
Continue his/her education either through appropriate continuing education activities and/or through pursuing an RN degree.
Function as an advocate for the health care consumer.
Comply with scope of practice as outlined in the Licensed Practical Nurse Practice Act of West Virginia.
