The Graphic Design program is taught through courses and certificates which begin with the simplest concepts and advance through more complex competencies. Because the program begins with basic drawing training, it is ideal for students of any skill level. Those students with a higher degree of previous training will simply progress at a faster pace.

Functioning as both a college-preparatory and employment training program, the courses prepare students for higher education and entry into mid-level employment. At West Virginia State Community & Technical College, a student may earn up to 32 credits toward an associate's degree in General Technology: Graphic Design Option. This comprises approximately half of the 66 hour degree program.

With emphasis on "design for print," computer literacy and employability skills are stressed along with up-to-date intensive career-specific technological training. Various skills and theory taught, software programs available to students, and prerequisites may be found on the course descriptions page of this site.

Graduates of this program have been highly successful not only in attaining employment and college acceptance (approximately 95%), but also in winning awards, earning scholarships, and gaining valuable recognition through in-class real world graphic design experiences.

Many people discover that, given the time, they tend to draw for fun and relaxation. How exciting then that within the graphic design field one can actually be paid to enjoy oneself! In a world where too few people take pleasure from their occupation, this fact should come as welcome news to those who draw or paint for recreational purposes but would like to convert those artistic skills to employment skills.
