Graphic Design
Course Descriptions

This two-year applied design diploma program is offered in 8 courses, each of which conforms to a 90-minute block and lasts for one term (semester). To earn a diploma, college credit, or the certificates listed below, one must maintain a minimum B (85%) av
erage.

Certificate 1
Basic Illustration Study of the design elements; broad training in drawing and shading techniques; exploration of various drawing mediums. Prerequisite(s): None
Illustration
One-, two-, three-point and elliptical perspective techniques; composition; color theory and figure drawing. Prerequisite(s): None

Certificate 2
Fundamentals of Graphic Design & Production
Design principles, pre-design analysis, layout, typography, hand- and computer-generated illustration, and computer-ready file preparation. This course provides the basics for designing, illustrating, and preparing printed documents for the commercial printing process. Prerequisite(s): None; Basic Illustration and Illustration are recommended.
Graphic Design Continuation of the graphic design process, including the use of screen tints, halftones, bleeds, die cuts, scanned image files, embossing, trapping, and prepress/preflight techniques. Included
are advanced hand- and computer-generated illustra-
tion and the preparation of real-world computer-ready
art. Prerequisite(s): Fundamentals of Graphic Design
& Production or currently enrolled; Basic Illustration
and Illustration are recommended.

Certificate 3
Computer Graphics Computer-generated illustration
and design with Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW (may include animation with Photoshop or CorelRAVE).
Prerequisite(s): Fundamentals of Graphic Design & Production, Graphic Design; Basic Illustration and Illustration are recommended.
Advanced Computer Graphics Advanced computer-generated illustration and design, which includes image editing techniques with Adobe Photoshop and may include Web site development with Adobe GoLive, Flash or Dreamweaver. Prerequisite(s): Fundamentals of Graphic Design & Production, Graphic Design; Computer Graphics or currently enrolled; Basic Illustration and Illustration are recommended.

Certificate 4
Page Layout/Desktop Publishing Page layout/desktop publishing with Adobe InDesign, Quark Xpress, and/or CorelVENTURA Publisher. Prerequisite(s): Fundamentals of Graphic Design & Production, Graphic Design; keyboarding (35 wpm) is recommended.
Advanced Page Layout/Desktop Publishing Advanced document design with the above-mentioned software; includes employability skills and portfolio completion for diploma program students. Prerequisite(s): Fundamentals of Graphic Design & Production, Graphic Design; Page Layout/Desktop Publishing or currently enrolled; keyboarding (35 wpm)

Stephen was recognized at the Governor's Mansion on July 28th, 2006. This illustration earned Stephen the '05-'06 Artist of the Year Award, given by his classmates. Stephen is presently working at Minuteman Press.
