Over the years, graphic design students have captured more than 25 national, 24 regional, over 300 state, and numerous county and local awards. In 1991, the Graphic Design program was presented the Governor's Award
for Outstanding Secondary Vocational Education Program in the state of West Virginia. Additionally, the West Virginia State Dept. of Education recognized the program with Exemplary Program Status. The U. S. Secretary's Award for Outstanding Vocational Program in West Virginia was granted the following year.
The most meaningful validation of the program comes
from the fact that many local businesses and organiza-
tions regularly visit the classroom for their graphic design needs. Whether it be a logo design, a brochure, a greeting card, or a program cover, the students relish the opportunity for "real world" design challenges. Many non-profit organizations seek out our design capabilities because we provide them with professional work at a very low cost.
Some of the most exciting recent design challenges
have been the annual holiday card designs for Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. These are particularly excellent learning experiences as they
involve not only working closely with a professional photographer and graphic designers, but also because
we are afforded the wonderful chance of completing a project for a well known international company with a finished product that will be distributed worldwide!
