Instructional Support

Computer Curriculum Specialists
Putnam County 's Computer Curriculum Specialists work cooperatively with school personnel to maximize the effective use of instructional technology programs for students. They plan and conduct technology trainings and assist in the planning and development of curricula that integrates technology into the instructional process.

Early Intervention Specialist
Putnam County's Early Intervention/At-Risk Specialist works primarily to design and implement accelerated teaching strategies for pre-school and low achieving students, provide staff development, and assist individual schools in delivering instruction to close the achievement gap.

ESL Instructor
ESL Instructors deliver a comprehensive program for children with limited English proficiency, using instructional management system models that lead to increased student learning. The teacher serves as a liaison between the parents or guardians and the educational community, and assists regular teachers of LEP students in modifying their instructional programs and in assessing and grading LEP students.

Exceptional Educators
Exceptional Educators provide services for students with exceptionalities, including autism, behavior disorders, giftedness, hearing impairments, learning disabilities, mental impairments, other health impairments, profound handicaps, visual impairments, and any other conditions which require an Individualized Educational Program.

Mathematics Curriculum Specialist
The Mathematics Curriculum Specialist designs and implements county-wide math programs, provides instructional coaching, staff development, parent training, research, and assistance with Title I math programs. In addition, the math specialist works with teachers to develop summer remedial math programs and assists with the county-wide focus on meeting the needs of low-achieving students. The math curriculum specialist is instrumental in developing parent programs and conducting an annual Parent Conference.

Occupational Therapists
Occupational Therapists provide OT services to students as recommended by a medical doctor and in accordance with state law and WVDE policy and regulations. The OT participates in the development, evaluation, and revision of the Individualized Education Program, Total Service Plan, and the implementation plan. They develop therapy schedules, adapt the intervention environment according to the needs of the student, and provide in-service training for other school personnel.

Physical Therapists
Physical Therapists provide PT services to students as recommended by a medical doctor and in accordance with state law and WVDE policy. The PT participates in the development, evaluation, and revision of the Individualized Education Program, Total Service Plan, and the implementation plan. They assist students in securing proper medical care and modified materials/equipment. In addition, they develop therapy schedules and consult with regular educators regarding the handling and education of physically handicapped students. They provide in-service training for other school personnel.

School Counselors
School Counselors work collaboratively with other school and county staff to promote the intellectual, psychological, and social development of students. They conduct appropriate individual and group counseling, provide appropriate support to students and staff, and collaborate with parents to assist in obtaining support services from county-based and outside agencies. In addition, they coordinate efforts to remedy unsatisfactory student progress, and at the secondary level, monitor credits and transcripts and inform students of career and post-secondary programs.

School Nurses
School Nurses deliver health services to students in accordance with state and county policies and guidelines. They plan, develop, and implement programs that facilitate health services for students, gather and interpret data relevant to health services, collaborate with parents/guardians and other school personnel, and perform routine health screenings. In addition, they monitor student health records, make medical referrals, and monitor specific programs related to the health needs of students.

School Psychologists
School Psychologists provide professional support services and leadership for the effective implementation of programs for students identified as "at risk" or with special needs. They work with schools and parents/guardians to document strengths, weaknesses, learning abilities, and behavior of referred students through appropriate testing and diagnostic practices. They administer psychological, academic, and other required evaluations and make appropriate recommendations for students. They provide specialized training programs and confer with all appropriate individuals regarding the needs of all "at risk" and special needs students whenever necessary.

Speech Language Pathologists
Speech/Language Pathologists deliver a comprehensive instructional support program to students with speech and language impairments in accordance with state law and WVDE and county policies and regulations. They screen and evaluate students for speech/language difficulties, communicate with parents/guardians and appropriate school personnel, write and implement Total Service Plans, and confer with parents/guardians in the writing of the implementation plan. In addition, they provide on-going staff development to teachers.

Title I Basic Skills Specialist
The Title I Basic Skills Specialist primarily focuses on designing remedial teaching strategies for low achieving students and coordinating and expanding parental involvement activities in Title I schools. The Specialist provides instructional coaching, staff development, parent training, research, and assistance with Title I programs. In addition, the specialist works with teachers to develop summer remedial programs and assists with the county-wide focus on meeting the needs of low-achieving students. The specialist is instrumental in developing parent programs and conducting an annual Parent Conference

Workforce Investment Act Support Personnel WIA Counselors and Remedial Educators are grant-funded specialists who work with secondary students to provide counseling services and remediation in accordance with state law and WVDE and county policies and regulations. The WIA Counselor works collaboratively with other school and county staff to promote the intellectual, psychological and social development of students. The WIA Remediation Teacher works with identified students to provide remediation in particular basic skills areas.
