Programmatic Levels
Early Childhood Education K-5
At the Early Childhood Level, kindergarten through fifth grade, Putnam County Schools ensures that all students master the basic academic skills of reading, mathematical computation, computing, listening, and speaking. All students are given the opportunity to assess, explore and develop their unique talents and abilities through regular course offerings as well as special programs and learning opportunities. All students participate in a comprehensive career guidance program which exposes them to the world of work in a relevant and developmentally appropriate manner. Appropriate behaviors, work habits and attitudes, goal setting, planning, self-assessment, self-direction, and responsibility are taught and reinforced through a comprehensive Responsible Students Program.
Putnam County has fourteen elementary schools:
Middle Childhood Education 6-8
At the Middle Childhood Level (6-8), students continue to master the basic academic skills, receive appropriate guidance services and have the opportunity to explore and identify their own interests and talents. The curriculum includes career exploration units and activities, enhanced computer instruction and utilization, the assessment of students' interests and aptitudes, implementation of a responsible behavior program, participation in work-based experiences, introduction to the high school cluster curriculum, as well as the development of individual educational plans for the first two years of high school.
Putnam County has four middle schools:
Adolescent Education 9-12
The Putnam County Schools adolescent education program encompasses grades 9-12. At the Adolescent Level (9-12), students continue mastery of core academic skills, become focused on career planning and preparation, and experience elective and extra curricular offerings that enhance unique talent and skills.
During the ninth and tenth grades, students complete basic high school courses and a career guidance program that includes self assessments and work based experiences. At the end of grade ten, students select a career focus and develop a four year plan to address the focus. During the eleventh and twelfth grades, all students complete requirements specific to their career focuses, including specific academic and technical preparation, work based experiences and the development of job seeking and job keeping skills.
The senior high schools in Putnam County, so far as possible, offer students an opportunity to study subjects in the following general areas: Language arts (including foreign language), social studies, mathematics, science, business education, industrial arts, home economics, science arts, music, technical and vocational education, physical education and health. Opportunities are provided for instruction in band, orchestra, choral work, art, speech and dramatics, so far as possible.
All Putnam County high schools have student activity programs for the purpose of developing leadership and democratic participation in group activities. In addition, the Putnam County adolescent education program of instruction meets all requirements of the West Virginia Board of Education.
